The threaded connection between casing joints is the weakest link in the casing string. Every connection must transmit axial tension from the suspended weight below, resist burst pressure from inside and collapse pressure from outside, and maintain a leak-tight seal against well fluids under all downhole loading conditions. API 5CT defines three standard connection types — STC, LTC, and BTC — each offering different performance characteristics.

Short Thread Coupling (STC)

STC is the simplest and most economical API connection. It uses an 8-round thread form with a short thread length and a coupling sleeve. The thread provides the mechanical connection; the seal relies on thread compound (pipe dope) filling the clearance between the thread flanks. STC’s joint efficiency in tension is approximately 50–60% of the pipe body strength, meaning the connection is the limiting factor for axial load capacity.

STC is suitable for conductor casing and surface casing where axial loads and internal pressures are moderate. It is not recommended for intermediate or production strings where higher burst, collapse, or tension ratings are required. The thread-compound seal is adequate for low-pressure service but does not provide a reliable gas-tight seal under high differential pressure.

Long Thread Coupling (LTC)

LTC uses the same 8-round thread form as STC but with a longer thread engagement length, providing approximately 15–20% higher joint strength in tension compared to STC. The longer thread also provides more thread compound area for improved sealing, though it is still not classified as a gas-tight connection. LTC is the volume standard for intermediate casing in sweet-service wells where gas-tight integrity is not required.

The cost premium for LTC over STC is modest — typically 3–5% — because the only difference is the thread length and coupling size. Given this small premium and the meaningful improvement in joint strength, most casing designers default to LTC over STC except for shallow conductor and surface strings where STC’s lower cost and adequate performance make it the logical choice.

Buttress Thread Coupling (BTC)

BTC uses a buttress thread form with a broader, more squared thread profile compared to the 8-round form of STC and LTC. This profile provides significantly higher joint efficiency in tension — typically 80–90% of pipe body strength — and better resistance to combined tension-and-bending loads encountered in deviated and horizontal wells.

BTC connections are the standard for production casing and deep intermediate casing where the axial load from the suspended string weight approaches the pipe body rating. The buttress thread form also provides better resistance to galling during make-up, allowing more reliable field connections in the demanding conditions of offshore and remote drilling operations.

However, like STC and LTC, BTC is a thread-compound-sealed connection that does not provide a metal-to-metal gas-tight seal. For wells producing gas, or for casing exposed to gas migration behind the cement sheath, premium connections with metal-to-metal seals are specified instead of or in addition to BTC.

Premium Connections

Where API connections reach their limits, premium connections from proprietary manufacturers (VAM, Tenaris Blue, Hunting SEAL-LOCK, etc.) provide metal-to-metal seals, higher joint efficiency, and improved fatigue resistance. Premium connections are specified for gas wells, HPHT wells, offshore production casing, and any application where a gas-tight seal is mandatory. The cost premium over BTC is typically 30–60%, justified by the enhanced leak integrity and structural performance.

Choosing the Right Connection

The connection decision is driven by the casing load analysis: if the required tension, burst, or collapse rating exceeds the connection’s rated capacity, step up to the next connection type or consider premium. If gas-tight integrity is required, API round-thread connections are insufficient — specify BTC or premium.
