RDSO specification 02-ABR-94 is the definitive document: it defines the material, dimensions, testing, and marking requirements that every air brake pipe must satisfy before installation on freight wagons, coaching stock, or locomotives.

Scope of RDSO 02-ABR-94

The specification covers cold-drawn seamless steel tubes used for air brake piping in broad-gauge rolling stock. This includes the main brake pipe (running the length of the vehicle), branch pipes connecting to individual brake cylinders, auxiliary reservoir feed pipes, and control pipe connections to the distributor valve. Each pipe carries compressed air at working pressures of 5–6 bar with periodic surges during emergency brake application.

The specification mandates specific outside diameters and wall thicknesses for each pipe function. Main brake pipes are typically 25 mm or 31.75 mm OD with 2.5–3.2 mm wall thickness. Branch pipes and auxiliary connections use smaller diameters of 12–19 mm OD with 1.6–2.0 mm wall. The exact dimensions are referenced to RDSO drawing numbers specific to each wagon or coach type.

Material and Manufacturing Requirements

The steel must meet defined chemistry limits for carbon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus. The tubes must be manufactured by the cold-drawn seamless process — ERW (electric resistance welded) tubes are not accepted for air brake service. This requirement reflects the safety-critical nature of the application: a pipe failure during braking could result in loss of braking capability on an entire rake.

Every tube must be stress-relief annealed after cold drawing to ensure adequate ductility for bending during installation. The specification defines minimum bend radius requirements that the tube must survive without cracking, wrinkling, or wall thinning beyond specified limits. Hydrostatic testing at specified pressures and pneumatic leak testing are mandatory before dispatch.

Testing and Inspection

RDSO-approved air brake pipes undergo a comprehensive testing regime: chemical analysis on every heat of steel, tensile and hardness testing, flattening test to verify ductility, hydrostatic test at the specified pressure, dimensional inspection of OD, wall thickness, and straightness, and visual examination for surface defects. The inspection is witnessed by RDSO-nominated inspectors or RITES inspectors who verify compliance at the manufacturing facility before dispatch.

Marking requirements are equally specific: each tube must be permanently marked with the manufacturer’s identification, RDSO specification number, heat number, and inspection lot number. This traceability chain connects every installed brake pipe back to its manufacturing record, enabling root cause investigation in the event of an in-service failure.
