Why Seamless, Not Welded
An ERW tube contains a longitudinal weld seam created by resistance welding the edges of a formed steel strip. While modern ERW processes produce reliable welds, the weld seam inherently introduces a metallurgical discontinuity — a narrow zone where the microstructure differs from the parent metal. Under cyclic pressure loading and vibration, this weld seam acts as a preferential fatigue crack initiation site.
A seamless tube has no weld seam. The entire cross-section is uniform parent metal with consistent grain structure, chemistry, and mechanical properties. There is no preferential failure path. Under the same cyclic loading conditions, a seamless tube’s fatigue life is governed by its overall material properties rather than by a localised weak point.
For a component that experiences millions of pressure cycles over its service life (every brake application and release is a cycle, multiplied by years of daily service), the elimination of the weld-seam fatigue initiation site provides a meaningful safety margin that RDSO considers essential for this application.
Why Cold-Drawn, Not Hot-Finished
Cold drawing transforms a hot-finished mother tube into a precision product with three characteristics critical for air brake service: tighter dimensional tolerances (±0.10–0.15 mm on OD versus ±1% for HFS), improved surface finish (Ra 1.6 μm versus 6–12 μm for descaled HFS), and refined grain structure (ASTM 7–9 versus 5–7 for HFS).
Dimensional precision matters because air brake pipe assemblies are manufactured to tight routing templates with pre-formed bends at specific locations. Pipes that vary in OD beyond the specified tolerance may not fit the pipe clips, pass through bulkhead glands, or seat properly in compression fittings. In a safety-critical system where every joint must be leak-tight at working pressure, dimensional consistency is not optional.
Surface finish matters for two reasons. Internally, a smooth bore surface reduces turbulent flow losses and minimises the accumulation of moisture and contaminants that could impair distributor valve function. Externally, a smooth surface resists corrosion initiation better than the rough, scaled surface of an HFS tube, extending service life in the underfloor environment where brake pipes are exposed to road spray, ballast dust, and atmospheric corrosion.
Grain Structure and Bend Performance
Air brake pipe installation involves multiple bends to route the pipe around underframe members, bogie pivot areas, and equipment mounting zones. The fine-grained structure of CDS tubes provides superior bend performance: tighter achievable bend radii without wrinkling or wall thinning, and better fatigue resistance at the bend locations where cyclic stress is concentrated by the geometric stress concentration factor.
A coarse-grained HFS tube can be bent, but it is more prone to orange-peel surface texture on the tension side of the bend, wall thinning at the extrados, and micro-cracking at the intrados — all of which reduce fatigue life in the bend zone. For safety-critical piping where bends are unavoidable and fatigue is the dominant failure mode, the grain refinement provided by cold drawing is an essential quality attribute.
