ASTM A53 and JIS G3454 both cover seamless steel pipes for fluid transport service, but they originate from different engineering traditions and their specifications are not interchangeable. Projects with American engineering heritage specify A53; projects with Japanese or Asian engineering specify G3454. Understanding the differences prevents procurement errors and ensures your pipe meets the project’s governing standard.
ASTM A53: The American Standard
ASTM A53 covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe for mechanical and pressure applications. Grade A (Fy = 205 MPa, Fu = 330 MPa) and Grade B (Fy = 240 MPa, Fu = 415 MPa) are the two standard grades, with Grade B accounting for the vast majority of commercial orders. The specification covers pipe sizes from NPS 1/8 through NPS 26, with wall thicknesses defined by schedule numbers (Schedule 10 through Schedule 160) or by nominal pipe size and weight per foot.
A53 mandates either hydrostatic testing or non-destructive electric testing on every pipe. For seamless pipe (Type S), hydrostatic test pressures are calculated from the pipe’s OD, wall thickness, and the allowable fiber stress for the grade. The specification also permits galvanized coating (hot-dip zinc) as a standard option for corrosion protection in water and gas distribution service.
JIS G3454: The Japanese Standard
JIS G3454 covers carbon steel pipes for pressure service, designated STPG 370 (Fu = 370 MPa minimum) and STPG 410 (Fu = 410 MPa minimum). The grades are defined by tensile strength rather than yield strength, reflecting the Japanese standards tradition. STPG 370 is broadly equivalent to ASTM A53 Grade A, and STPG 410 is broadly equivalent to A53 Grade B, though the exact chemistry, testing, and tolerance requirements differ.
JIS specifies pipe dimensions in metric nominal bore sizes with Japanese schedule numbers (Sch 10S through Sch 160). While the schedule system is conceptually similar to ASME B36.10, the actual wall thicknesses for some sizes differ slightly. This means that a “Schedule 40” pipe in JIS G3454 may not have exactly the same wall thickness as a Schedule 40 pipe in ASTM A53 — a detail that matters for pressure calculations and interchangeability with fittings and flanges manufactured to the other standard.
JIS G3452: General Purpose (SGP)
JIS G3452 covers carbon steel pipes for ordinary piping — the SGP (Steel Gas Pipe) grade. This is a lower-tier specification than G3454, intended for low-pressure water, air, and gas distribution in building services. SGP pipe has no minimum mechanical property requirements beyond basic tensile strength and is not suitable for pressure piping or process service. It is the Japanese equivalent of ASTM A120 (now withdrawn) — a commercial-quality pipe for non-critical service.
Choosing Between Standards
The governing standard is typically determined by the project’s engineering basis. EPC contractors working to American codes (ASME B31.1, B31.3) specify ASTM A53. Japanese EPC firms and projects with Japanese process licenses specify JIS G3454. When both standards appear on the same project, material substitution requires formal engineering approval because the testing, marking, and certification requirements differ enough to affect traceability and regulatory compliance.
